The NBA Has Shown How They Handle Situations Like LeBron James’ Clash With a Referee
The NBA has already set an example for the kind of punishment LeBron James might face after his clash with a referee during Sunday’s close 116-114 win over the Phoenix Suns. LeBron was a major part of the win, scoring 26 points, grabbing three rebounds, and making four assists. This win keeps the Lakers in the running for second place in the Western Conference, with 18 wins and seven losses so far this season. The Denver Nuggets have 19 wins, while the Oklahoma City Thunder lead with 24.
But Sunday’s game was mainly remembered because of a tense moment involving LeBron. The 40-year-old had a face-off with Suns forward Dillon Brooks before grabbing the arm of an NBA referee and shouting at them. This happened in the third quarter after Brooks was fouled by LeBron’s teammate, Luke Doncic. Brooks lost the ball and hit it toward LeBron, which made him really upset. A referee tried to step between them to calm things down, but LeBron kept shouting and even grabbed the official’s arm. His teammate Rui Hachimura and coach JJ Redick had to step in and hold him back.
It looks like LeBron might face more punishment from the NBA because of this. We can guess what might happen by looking at similar cases. For example, Indiana Pacers guard Bennedict Mathurin got a one-game suspension without pay in January 2025 for touching and verbally abusing a referee. Mathurin later said, “It was the moment. The game is so intense, and I’m very competitive. I just want to win. It was an unfortunate situation, but I learned from it.”
LeBron’s situation isn’t the first time a Lakers player has gotten in trouble with the NBA over how they acted toward officials. In April, Doncic was kicked out during a Lakers loss to the Thunder because officials thought he had abused a referee. Doncic said he was just trash-talking a fan and explained after the game, “If the fan talks, I talk back, like always. That had nothing to do with the ref, so I didn’t understand it.”
Last year, Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers was also ejected during a win over the San Antonio Spurs after arguing with a referee named Jenna Schroeder. He shouted at her and had to be held back. But, according to the official report, the contact between Embiid and the referee was accidental, so he didn’t get any extra punishment.
