Real Madrid’s chances of signing Rodri might be fading as two big European clubs are making a late move for the Manchester City star. After an amazing summer with Spain at the World Cup—where he helped win the biggest prize in football and also won the Ballon d’Or—Rodri has shown he’s still one of the top players in the game.
Many were worried after his tough ACL injury in 2024 that he might not come back strong. But the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner has proven he’s still at his best, catching Real Madrid’s eye again, especially with Jose Mourinho now in charge.
Rodri has often been linked with a move to Real Madrid, and since his contract with City is ending next year, a transfer could finally happen. Reports say Real Madrid have agreed personal terms with Rodri and are now working out a deal with Manchester City.
However, Madrid might face competition as Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona have also shown interest in the Spain captain. PSG has contacted City to ask about a deal, while Barcelona has reached out to Rodri’s team after Frenkie de Jong suffered a knee injury at the World Cup.
Even so, Real Madrid are still thought to be in the lead to sign Rodri if he leaves City this summer.
For Manchester United fans, this situation isn’t great. Rodri’s move to Real Madrid could affect their plans to sign another star midfielder. United are keen to bring in top players after signing Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos for a combined £85 million.
One player linked to United is Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, who might be allowed to leave—but only if Madrid can sign Rodri as his replacement. So if Rodri stays at City or moves to another club like PSG or Barcelona, it could hurt United’s hopes of landing Tchouameni, who would be a big signing for them.
