A leaked letter from Gianni Infantino to the Argentine FA has come out during the investigation into the FIFA World Cup final.

A letter from FIFA president Gianni Infantino to Argentina’s Football Association was reportedly leaked, even though FIFA is still looking into some unpleasant incidents after the World Cup final.

After Ferran Torres scored in extra time to give Spain the win, there were some tense moments as a few members of Argentina’s team and coaching staff got into physical and verbal conflicts with Spanish players. Leandro Paredes seemed to grab Eric Garcia by the throat and push Gavi to the ground, while Nahuel Molina appeared to throw a punch at Spain’s captain, Rodri. Many from Argentina’s team also turned their backs as Rodri lifted the trophy.

FIFA has opened an investigation into these events. Meanwhile, a petition asking for Argentina to be banned from future tournaments has gathered over 23 million signatures. At the same time, Argentina fans started a counter-petition asking for the final to be replayed, saying referee Slavko Vinčić was corrupt—though there’s no evidence that FIFA or the referee was bribed.

Argentine Football Association president Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia urged fans to accept Spain’s win. However, Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, was less kind, saying: “The problem with Argentina is that we stand out. We don’t go unnoticed. People are jealous of us, and we’re good at almost everything. I’m sorry, but someone had to say it.”

Despite the ongoing FIFA investigation, Infantino’s leaked letter praised Argentina’s “professionalism.” As reported by Argentine media and later confirmed by the Daily Mail, Infantino wrote:

“Dear Mr President, on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at the spectacular New York New Jersey Stadium, Argentina won the silver medal at the FIFA World Cup 2026, after an exciting final against Spain.

I want to warmly congratulate you on this important achievement for Argentine soccer. The World Cup 2026 will be remembered as an incredible football celebration, filled with thrilling matches, new stars, famous players, and amazing atmospheres in packed stadiums.

Argentina’s outstanding performance played a key role in making this edition unforgettable for millions of football fans around the world. Please pass on my sincere congratulations to the players, coach Lionel Scaloni, the coaching and medical staff, and, of course, all the passionate fans who supported the team during the tournament.

Success like this comes from hard work, professionalism, attention to detail, and also passion and love for this wonderful sport. This promises a bright future and will surely lead to more great moments for Argentine football.

I wish you all the best in future tournaments and hope to see you again soon.

With warm regards,
Gianni Infantino.”
