Spurs ‘agree’ to let star player leave after World Cup as club makes an offer
Spurs have accepted that one of their key players will leave this summer, just after the World Cup, according to reports.
With new boss Roberto De Zerbi in charge, Spurs have wasted no time spending big this summer as they aim to improve their league position after narrowly avoiding relegation by beating Everton on the last day.
The North London club have been the biggest spenders in the Premier League, splashing out £237 million on three new signings: Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Jan Paul van Hecke.
They’ve also picked up free agents Andy Robertson, Marco Senesi, and Martin Dubravka to strengthen the squad.
Of course, some players will be leaving too, and it’s reported that Spurs are ready to let their captain, Cristian Romero, move on.
According to Sportitalia, via FC Inter 1908, Romero’s exit is confirmed, and Inter Milan are very interested in the Argentina defender.
Inter had been talking to Spurs about England’s Djed Spence, but Romero’s name soon came up, and a possible deal for the 28-year-old is in the works.
Inter see Romero as a top target in defense after losing Stefan de Vrij and Francesco Acerbi. Although they think his price is still a bit high, they hope to negotiate it down. Plus, Romero is keen to return to Serie A.
Romero joined Spurs from Atalanta on loan after Juventus sold him, and he has made 156 appearances in all competitions. He also helped Spurs win the Europa League in 2025, ending their long trophy drought.
Spurs already have two new Premier League-ready center-backs, Van Hecke and Senesi, and they want to keep Micky van de Ven by starting new contract talks.
More signings could still be coming, with De Zerbi telling club media that the transfer window isn’t over yet.
Up front, Spurs are linked with Manchester City’s Savinho and Bournemouth’s young talent Eli Junior Kroupi.
De Zerbi said, “I feel very good because we are working well. I think we are building a very good team, with some important new players, and we’re starting a new chapter in the club’s history.
“I spent a lot of time getting to know the club before joining in April. I understood the owner’s ideas and the plan was clear even before the Everton game.
“Now we are fully involved in the project. We’re excited to build a strong team, but the transfer window isn’t finished yet. For now, I’m very happy, proud, and positive.
“We want to build a team with soul, passion, and the values we believe in.”
