The Open Prize Money: How Much Ryan Fox Made at Royal Birkdale
Ryan Fox’s prize money after winning the 2026 Open Championship has just been announced!
After an exciting four days at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, Fox was crowned the 2026 Open champion. The New Zealander finished with a great score of 10-under-par, just one shot ahead of runner-up Cam Young.
Going into the final day, several top players were still in the running. Reigning champ Scottie Scheffler made a strong push but ended up with seven-under-par after a tough final hole. Bryson DeChambeau, despite some controversy earlier in the weekend that led to a two-shot penalty, still had a shot but finished four-under-par after a disappointing last round. Meanwhile, 2026 Masters winner Rory McIlroy ended up just one-under-par.
This year, The Open had a record $17.75 million (£13.3 million) prize fund for the 156 players, which is $750,000 (£560,000) more than last year’s tournament at Royal Portrush. So, how much did Fox and other stars like Scheffler, DeChambeau, and McIlroy take home?
Fox earned $3.2 million (£2.4 million) for winning, which is $100,000 more than Scheffler got last year. All players in the top three earned over $1.1 million (£820,000) each. Cam Young took home $1,842,000 (£1,373,800) for second place, and Sam Burns earned $1,181,000 (£880,800) for third.
Local favorite Tommy Fleetwood, from Southport, tied for fourth with Scheffler, and both earned $827,500 (£615,539). DeChambeau, finishing tied for 14th, received $234,325 (£174,303), while McIlroy, tied for 40th with five others, earned $69,750 (£51,883) each.
Even though The Open offered its biggest prize pool ever, it’s still the smallest among the major golf tournaments this year. For comparison, McIlroy won a historic $4.5 million (£3.3 million) for his second Masters win in April. Aaron Rai took home $3.6 million (£2.7 million) for his first major win at the PGA Championship in May. And Wyndham Clark earned the same amount as McIlroy for his second US Open victory last month.
