Andy Burnham gave his first speech as the new UK Prime Minister on Monday morning, and he was joined at Downing Street by a well-known football figure. Burnham became Leader of the Labour Party on Friday and officially took over from Sir Keir Starmer as Prime Minister after meeting King Charles.

The 56-year-old was the first Mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 until June this year. He stepped down after winning a by-election to become the MP for Makerfield, which is about 15 miles from his hometown of Aintree.

His family, friends, and political supporters were there to hear his first speech outside 10 Downing Street — including Everton legend Peter Reid. The 70-year-old, who played for England 13 times and was in the 1986 World Cup, surprised some fans when he showed up in the crowd. Burnham gave Reid a big hug after his speech.

Earlier this month, Burnham even recorded a birthday video for Reid when he turned 70. The new Prime Minister is a big Everton fan and, like his predecessor Starmer, has a season ticket to watch Premier League games at his club’s stadium. Starmer, an Arsenal supporter, was advised not to sit in the Emirates stands for security reasons after becoming Prime Minister.

Reid said Burnham told him he planned to keep his seat at the Hill Dickinson Stadium after becoming PM, but Reid jokingly told him, “No chance.”

Reid told Sky News, “I just said, ‘Congratulations, and get in there, lad.’ It’s a Scouse thing. Meeting him at Downing Street felt special. He’s been a good mate for a long time, so it was great to see him and his family. He’s got a big job ahead!”
