Cristiano Ronaldo got teased during Spain’s World Cup win, and the video is now going viral.
At a celebration with Spain’s World Cup winners on Monday, a funny joke about Cristiano Ronaldo was made while thousands of fans gathered in Madrid to cheer for their team’s big win.
After beating Argentina in the final, Luis de la Fuente’s squad was welcomed back by about two million fans in Spain’s capital. The 26 players and coaching staff met Spain’s royal family and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez before riding through Madrid on an open-top bus with the message: “Stars shine together.”
They ended up at Cibeles Square, a famous spot in Madrid, where 120,000 supporters waited to see the players on stage. The players wore t-shirts saying “Somos Campeones,” which means “We Are Champions.”
Before going on stage, each player was introduced by host Raul Ramos, who made people laugh with a joke about Cristiano Ronaldo. When introducing Crystal Palace’s Yeremy Pino, he said: “Back where he’s from, they used to call Pino ‘Cristiano Ronaldo.’ The only difference? Pino has a World Cup.”
The joke got some laughs from the crowd and the co-host. Ronaldo and Portugal had been knocked out in the round of 16 by Spain after Arsenal’s Mikel Merino scored a late winning goal.
After the match, Ronaldo emotionally said it was his last World Cup. “I’m sad to leave like this,” he said. “I gave it my all and leave with a clear conscience. This is the life of a footballer—you have to keep moving.”
He added, “It was my last World Cup, yes. Now it’s time to think and be with my family.” Ronaldo also reminded fans of his amazing career, saying he’s won three titles with Portugal, and the 2016 Euros is just as big as a World Cup.
At 41, Ronaldo had a record-breaking tournament. He’s scored 146 goals in 232 games for Portugal since 2003. He also became the oldest player to score in a World Cup knockout game, breaking the record held by former teammate Pepe.
