Gerard Pique will always be fondly remembered by Spanish fans for helping Spain win their first World Cup in 2010. That team had some of the best footballers ever, but Pique thinks there are three players in today’s team who might even be better.

As the owner of Andorra FC, Pique played a key role when Spain beat the Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup final, with Andres Iniesta scoring the winning goal that made Spain World Cup champions for the first time.

Now, looking ahead to 2026, coach Luis de la Fuente has the chance to lead Spain to their second World Cup win, but they’ll have to face three-time champions Argentina.

In an interview with AS Diario, Pique said he thinks Spain’s current team is the best in the world after seeing how they dominated France in the semi-final. He believes Spain should be favorites in the upcoming matches.

Pique said that while his 2010 team was an underdog, they had a special “aura” and “charisma” around them compared to today’s squad. Still, he feels there are three standout players now who might surpass those in the legendary 2010 team.

He said, “They’re very similar. Many say the 2010 team had more aura and charisma, but that’s looking back after 16 years. Back then, we weren’t the favorites, especially after losing to Switzerland—nobody expected us to win.

“I believe the current team, with players like Pedri, Lamine Yamal, and Pau Cubarsi, can be as good or even better than the 2010 team. They just need more time.”

It’s worth noting that all three players Pique mentioned are current Barcelona stars—the same club where he won the La Liga title nine times.

These young players have already achieved a lot internationally, winning the La Liga title this season. Both Pedri and Yamal also helped Spain win the 2024 European Championship.
