Spurs have to respond to a crazy Mateus Fernandes rumor after training clips went viral

A well-known journalist has helped clear up a fan rumor about new summer signing Mateus Fernandes.

Fernandes joined Tottenham from West Ham United this summer for £85 million after impressing despite West Ham’s relegation last season. The 22-year-old has already caught the eye of Spurs fans in friendlies against MK Dons—where he scored a fantastic volley—and in Auckland, New Zealand.

Lately, some Spurs supporters got worried after a video showed Fernandes sitting out a training session, sparking rumors that he might have a serious ACL injury.

One fan said, “I hope Mateus Fernandes hasn’t done his ACL injury. That would be so tough for such a talented player.” Another added, “If Fernandes really has an ACL injury, Spurs might struggle without their best midfielder.” Others were skeptical, calling the rumors a circus or just plain confusing.

Thankfully, Football London journalist Alasdair Gold set the record straight. He explained that Fernandes is unlikely to play in Spurs’ pre-season friendly against Sydney FC on July 29, but he is not injured.

Gold shared that head coach Roberto De Zerbi has been working the players hard in training, especially those who started pre-season early. The team is carefully managing players’ time at training and matches due to factors like fatigue, small niggles, illness, or jet lag. Several players have been rested recently to keep them fresh.

De Zerbi’s approach to football is intense and demands a lot, so the coaching staff, including his trusted strength and conditioning coach Agostino Tibaudi and fitness coach Marcattilio Marcattilii, are making sure the players are ready for the season ahead.

Tottenham will continue their pre-season with games against Chelsea on August 1, Getafe on August 8 (behind closed doors), and Hoffenheim on August 15 and 16. Their Premier League season kicks off with an away game at Brentford on August 22.
