A family friend of Michael Schumacher shares fresh, heartfelt hope about his possible return to F1.
A close friend of Michael Schumacher’s family has shared a heartfelt update, hoping that the F1 legend will be seen again someday. Since his terrible ski accident in 2013, when he was skiing with his son Mick in the French Alps, Michael hasn’t appeared in public. The accident caused a serious brain injury after he hit his head on a rock, and he was rushed to the hospital. He had two surgeries and was kept in a medically-induced coma until June 2014.
Since then, the family has kept his condition very private, with few updates shared. But Christian Danner, a family friend, recently opened up in an interview. He said he wants to see Michael again, no matter what condition he’s in. “No matter how Michael looks or what state he’s in, I want to see him again,” Danner said. “The fact that he’s not out in public probably means he’s not well, but Formula One is ready for whatever comes. Michael is one of the greatest heroes in F1 history. If he were able and willing to come back, I believe everyone in F1 would support him.”
There have been rumors that Michael is living quietly in a place in Majorca, but those close to him haven’t confirmed anything. “When I talk to Corinna, or others who might know, they don’t share details,” Danner added. “Seeing a hero again, even with challenges, can bring a lot of hope and joy to everyone.”
It’s believed Michael’s ski helmet helped save his life during that accident. However, he still has trouble communicating and needs full-time care. Only a small group of nine people, including his wife Corinna and children Mick and Gina-Maria, have close access to him. Former F1 figures like Sabine Kehm, Jean Todt, and Ross Brawn are also part of his inner circle. Some former drivers, like Felipe Massa, Gerhard Berger, and Luca Badoer, have reportedly been allowed to visit him too.
Last year, Richard Hopkins, a former Red Bull operations head and close friend, said he didn’t expect to see Michael in public again. He respected the family’s privacy and said he wasn’t in the small group who visit Michael.
The family’s wish for privacy became even stronger after a blackmail attempt. Someone threatened to release private medical images and videos unless they were paid £12 million. Shockingly, it was their former security guard, Markus Fritsche, who betrayed their trust and was behind the plan. He got a suspended two-year sentence, but the family felt this was too soft and have appealed the decision. A representative said, “He was the mastermind, and the huge breach of trust is shocking. He should face a punishment that stops others from trying the same.”
Throughout everything, the family remains protective of Michael’s privacy and well-being, hoping to keep his memory and dignity safe.
