Bruno Guimaraes shares a statement after Eddie Howe’s departure, hinting at a big Arsenal transfer.
Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes shared a heartfelt message on social media after Eddie Howe left the club.
Howe’s sudden departure was confirmed on Thursday, following five amazing years at St James’ Park. The 48-year-old completely changed Newcastle, turning them from a team fighting relegation into one that competes with the best, even qualifying for the Champions League twice. He also made history by winning the Carabao Cup against Liverpool in 2025, ending a 70-year wait for a trophy.
Despite his success, Howe decided to step down because he felt he didn’t have full control over transfers. Recently, Newcastle sold key players like Alexander Isak, who moved to Liverpool for a club-record fee in 2025, and this summer saw Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali leave.
Howe even hinted after a tough 4-1 loss to Bristol City in pre-season that captain Bruno Guimaraes might be next to go, especially as Guimaraes is close to joining Arsenal. According to L’Equipe, Arsenal had a £77 million offer accepted on Friday, though some fees are still being worked out.
Back in July, Bruno told Newcastle he wanted to leave but promised he wouldn’t force a move like Isak did. He’s also asked to delay joining the team for pre-season training, which makes a switch to Arsenal seem near.
Since arriving from Lyon for £40 million in January 2022, Bruno has made a huge impact at Newcastle. Many see him as one of the Premier League’s top midfielders. Over 29 league games last season, he was involved in 15 goals, helping fans fall in love with his skill and passion.
Bruno had a great bond with Howe and posted an emotional message on Instagram, thanking the manager for helping him grow both on and off the pitch. He wrote:

Being your captain was an honor I will never forget. Sharing daily life with you and having you as my manager has been a true privilege. Under Howe, Bruno scored 31 goals and assisted 32 in 195 games, with Howe playing a big part in his development.
Sadly for Newcastle fans, Bruno’s close connection with Howe and his feelings about the manager’s exit make his future at the club uncertain. It looks like it’s only a matter of time until he officially joins Arsenal, especially as the club is close to appointing Matthias Jaissle as their new manager on a four-year deal.
