Spurs have made an £86m offer for a winger who has already turned down Liverpool.
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made a £47 million bid for a talented European winger who shone at the World Cup—and he’s already turned down Liverpool.
This summer, Roberto De Zerbi has strengthened Spurs by bringing in some great players. Tottenham spent about £185 million on midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, who joined from Newcastle United and West Ham United.
They’ve also signed Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion, plus defenders Marcos Senesi and Andrew Robertson, who joined after their contracts at Bournemouth and Liverpool finished. Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has also signed to help out behind Guglielmo Vicario and Antonín Kinský.
Captain Cristian Romero is likely to leave, with Spurs reportedly agreeing on a £34 million deal to sell him to Inter.
But Tottenham aren’t done yet. Reports from Portugal say the club has made an offer worth around £47 million for Benfica and Norway winger Andreas Schjelderup.
The 22-year-old might sound familiar to English fans—he scored a stunning goal that put Norway 1-0 in the World Cup quarter-finals against England, before Jude Bellingham’s heroics helped England win 2-1.
Schjelderup had a great World Cup, scoring once and assisting three times, following an impressive season at Benfica under Jose Mourinho.
According to Portuguese media outlet Now, Spurs’ offer includes about £39 million upfront and up to £8.7 million in extra fees. However, Schjelderup’s contract with Benfica lasts until 2028, with a release clause of £86 million.
He joined Benfica from Nordsjælland in 2023 and actually turned down Liverpool when he was just 16 in 2020.
About turning down such a big club, Schjelderup said, “It was a bit hard because growing up, you watch the big names, and then you hear they want you, so it’s exciting. But my dad and agents helped me make the right choice. It hurt a bit for me and my dad, but moving here meant I joined a first-team setup, instead of starting in youth squads. That felt right for me. I started in the under-19s but knew I’d get to the first team when ready. The club didn’t expect me to make it that quickly, but I planned it, and it worked out. Maybe I’ll join a big team in the future, but this was the best step now. When I’m ready, I’ll take the next step.”
He has also tried out with Bayern Munich and Juventus.
Spurs have also been linked with Manchester City winger Savinho and Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo.
