Coventry makes history by signing one of football’s most exciting young stars as Frank Lampard’s latest addition
Coventry is building a stronger team for the new Premier League season by signing one of football’s most exciting young players. The Sky Blues are back in the top league for the first time since 2001, after an amazing run in the Championship. They made a record-breaking move by signing goalkeeper Carl Rushworth for £22.5 million, following his great loan spell last season.
But Coventry isn’t stopping there! Reports say they have agreed to sign Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, who will become their most expensive player ever. Yirenkyi, who has played for the Ghana national team, currently plays in Denmark for FC Nordsjælland. Journalist Farzam Abolhosseini reported that the transfer fee is €27 million (£23.1 million).
Coventry will also pay an extra €3 million in add-ons, and a medical exam is planned soon. This deal will be the highest transfer fee ever paid in the Danish Superliga and the biggest sale for that league.
Yirenkyi, 20 years old, comes from the Right to Dream academy and has received great praise for his strong and skillful playing style. Many compare him to fellow Ghanaian star Michael Essien. He also scored the winning goal for Ghana in their last group match against Panama.
Nordsjælland has developed several top players, including Manchester United’s Patrick Dorgu and Spurs’ Mohammed Kudus. Yirenkyi chose Coventry because he was promised regular first-team football and an important role in the team.
He is expected to sign a long-term deal after Nordsjælland accepted the record-breaking offer.
