Man United ready to take on Liverpool for surprise Premier League star after tough transfer setback
Manchester United and Liverpool are both keeping a close eye on things after a Premier League star was told he might be allowed to leave this summer. With less than four weeks left before the transfer window closes, fans of both clubs aren’t too happy with how their teams have been handling signings so far.
Manchester United has been busy revamping their midfield by signing Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans and Chelsea’s Andrey Santos for a total of £85 million. They also brought in former Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer. On the other hand, Liverpool has stayed quiet after paying €40 million (£34.6m) for Osasuna winger Victor Munoz back in June.
But things could change soon. Both clubs are now watching Newcastle United’s striker Nick Woltemade closely. The German joined Newcastle last summer to help replace Alexander Isak, who left for Liverpool in a £125 million deal. However, Woltemade has struggled to find his rhythm.
Reports from CaughtOffside say Woltemade has been told he could leave Newcastle on loan this summer. Several European clubs, like Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Aston Villa, are interested. Now Liverpool and Manchester United seem to be joining the chase as they look to strengthen their forward lines before the window closes.
Newcastle would prefer to sell Woltemade permanently for around £56 million, which is less than the £69 million they paid last year. But a loan with an option to buy seems more likely right now. Neither United nor Liverpool see Woltemade as a first-choice player yet, but they’ll keep watching and might make a move later.
Out of the two, Manchester United looks more likely to make a move, hoping to replace Joshua Zirkzee and provide backup for their main striker, Benjamin Sesko.
This news comes just after transfer expert David Ornstein shared that United’s chance of signing another Newcastle star seems very slim. United has been linked to left-back Lewis Hall, but Newcastle isn’t willing to let him go, especially after losing many key players already this summer.
Ornstein said on The Athletic podcast, “I don’t expect him to be coming to Manchester United. There’s interest, but Newcastle will want to keep him, especially after Eddie Howe left. They might also offer him a new contract.”
