The summer 2026 transfer window has been really tough for Newcastle, with several key players leaving in big deals.
Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali both left early in the window, moving to Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur for a combined fee of around £170 million.
Shortly after, long-time manager Eddie Howe left the club following a disappointing 4-1 pre-season loss to Bristol City.
Now, after weeks of rumors, captain Bruno Guimaraes has officially joined Premier League champions Arsenal for £75 million.
The 28-year-old has signed a contract running until June 2030, with an option to extend for another year.
Even though Newcastle received a large transfer fee for Bruno, their statement seemed a bit odd, and it’s clear they aren’t happy about the deal.
“Newcastle United can announce that Bruno Guimaraes has joined Arsenal for an undisclosed fee,” the club said.
“The fee is one of the top ten highest ever for a player aged 28 or older, and a record for a player of his age and position.
“Bruno leaves St. James’ Park after 195 appearances and 31 goals for the Magpies.
“We wish Bruno and his family all the best.”
Given Bruno was the club captain who helped them win their first major trophy since 1969 and get back into the Champions League, the short statement says a lot.
“This has been one of the hardest decisions of my life,” Bruno said in the club’s comments.
“When I arrived, the club was facing tough times, and I’m very proud of what we achieved together.
“I really fell in love with this place—from day one, the fans, my teammates, Eddie, the staff, and everyone connected to the club made me and my family feel at home.
“I’m thankful to PIF, chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan, and Jamie Reuben for everything they’ve done for me and the club. Also, many thanks to David and Ross for their respect and efforts to keep me at Newcastle; I’m grateful for our time together.
“This move is tough because Newcastle means so much to me, but I want to try something new for myself and my family. I had a great talk with Matthias Jaissle, and I leave knowing the club is in good hands.
“To the supporters, thank you doesn’t feel enough, but I say it with all my heart. I will always be proud to have been part of this club’s journey. Thank you for everything.”
