Newcastle’s head coach Matthias Jaissle has shared an update on Anthony Elanga’s fitness, and fans are already praising him for his first big decision since taking charge.
Jaissle started his time at Newcastle with a solid showing in Spain. Although Yoane Wissa scored twice to cancel out Filip Ugrinic’s stunning goal, the game ended level.
The new coach also got to see his new signings up close, with Lukas Hornicek, Aladji Bamba, Bazoumana Toure, and Sean Steur all getting some game time. Joelinton played for over half an hour despite rumors linking him to a move to Saudi Arabia. Nick Woltemade, Will Osula, Harvey Barnes, Sven Botman, and Jacob Murphy also featured in the game.
However, the match was marred by a bad challenge from Valencia’s left-back Jose Gaya, which left Anthony Elanga injured and needing to be carried off the field. Newcastle fans were worried, but Jaissle gave a hopeful update afterward.
“It looks like it’s not too bad, so we’re pleased. Hopefully, he can start playing again next week,” Jaissle said.
He added, “Of course, I was worried at first, but now I feel better because the medical team is giving good reports.”
Talking about the team’s performance, Jaissle said, “Winning games always helps build confidence. We knew it had been a tough week. The players worked hard and showed great commitment in every session. They deserve a couple of days off, and then we get back to it.”
In other news, Jaissle seems to have picked German defender Malick Thiaw as the new captain, replacing Bruno Guimaraes. This is impressive since Thiaw is only in his second season at Newcastle.
Thiaw joined from AC Milan last summer, played 35 of 38 Premier League games last season, scored four goals, and also featured in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.
