Jannik Sinner injury update released just minutes after he pulled out of the Cincinnati Open, raising concerns about the US Open.
Jannik Sinner has sadly had to pull out of the Cincinnati Open because of a right knee injury. The 24-year-old world No.1 was all set to play in the Masters tournament next week as a warm-up for the US Open coming up next month.
Sinner is coming off an amazing win at Wimbledon and has made history this year by winning five ATP Masters 1000 titles in a row. He was expected to be the big name at Cincinnati, but on Sunday, it was announced he won’t be playing due to his injury.
Sinner shared, “After talking things over with my doctors and team, I have to say I can’t play in the Cincinnati Masters 1000. My right knee has been bothering me. Even though we’ve been working hard to fix it, I’m just not ready to compete yet. I’m really disappointed to miss Cincinnati and wish Bob and the whole team a fantastic event. I’m looking forward to coming back next year and now I’m focusing on getting ready for the US Open.”
His withdrawal made many wonder if he’ll be able to play at the US Open. Early news says he should be fine to compete. An Italian paper, La Gazzetta dello Sport, said this is just a precaution and there’s no big worry about the knee. They mentioned, “The knee isn’t a big problem. In fact, Sinner has been training hard last week. The smart choice is to avoid stress at a Masters event that’s also challenging because of the heat and humidity.”
They also said Sinner will spend another five or six days with his physiotherapist, Gianluca Melegati, to finish his recovery and be ready for the US Open.
Sinner’s pulling out comes soon after Carlos Alcaraz also withdrew with a wrist injury. Alcaraz hoped to be back playing this month but now might miss the US Open since he hasn’t played a match since mid-April.
The Cincinnati Open starts on Thursday, August 13, with top players like Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic competing.
Sinner has won the US Open once before, beating Taylor Fritz at Flushing Meadows in 2024. Last year, he was the runner-up, losing to his rival Alcaraz in four sets.
