Liverpool fans have voiced their frustration with the club’s owners after Andoni Iraola shared some worrying thoughts following their 3-2 pre-season loss to Monaco. Despite taking an early 2-0 lead with goals from Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, the Reds couldn’t hold on. Aleksandr Golovin’s penalty made it 2-1 before half-time, and Monaco came back strong in the second half with goals from Mika Biereth and Paul Brunner to win the game.
This isn’t the first time Liverpool have lost a two-goal lead recently—they also did that in their 4-2 loss to Leeds last week. While pre-season results aren’t the main focus (getting players sharp and settling new tactics are more important), Iraola’s comments after the Monaco game have fans worried.
He said, “We played a good first half, especially the first 30 minutes. Right now, we probably don’t have what it takes to play at this level for the full game. Monaco deserved to come back. We won the first two pre-season games, but in the last two, we couldn’t keep up the level. Once we made changes, players got tired and we couldn’t maintain it. We have work to do.”
Fans quickly pointed the finger at the club’s transfer activity this summer. Liverpool signed winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34.5 million and centre-back Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for £55 million, with Jacquet set to join this season. They’re also close to loaning centre-back Ronald Araujo from Barcelona, but fans have mixed feelings about this after the manager allowed him to leave.
With injuries leaving Jeremie Frimpong as the only natural right-back fit to start the season, and calls for reinforcements in defensive midfield and wide positions, fans feel the squad isn’t deep enough. There’s also interest in PSG’s winger Bradley Barcola, but Liverpool haven’t agreed to the £145 million asking price yet.
