Jannik Sinner is trying something new as he gets ready to come back to the US Open.

Jannik Sinner is trying a gentle medical treatment to get back in shape before the US Open.

Sinner, who lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the 2025 US Open final, announced on Sunday (August 9) that he won’t play at the Cincinnati Open, a Masters 1000 event. He had already skipped the Masters 1000 tournament in Canada to “focus on [his] health,” even though he was on a six-tournament winning streak at this level.

He pulled out of the Montreal Open because of a knee injury and hasn’t played since defending his Wimbledon title in July against Alexander Zverev.

“After talking with my doctors and team, I have to say I can’t play in Cincinnati,” Sinner said. “My right knee still hurts, and even with hard work from my medical team, I’m not ready to compete yet. I’m really sorry to miss Cincinnati and wish Bob [Moran] and the organizers a great event. I’m excited to come back next year and am now focusing on being ready for the US Open.”

Italian news site La Gazzetta dello Sport shared that Sinner is taking serious steps to heal before the season’s last big tournament. Following advice from Milan specialist Gianluca Melegati, Sinner has started shockwave therapy. He’s spending up to six days at the J Medical center in Turin for treatment.

The report said: “After seeing physio Melegati in Milan, who suggested shockwave therapy, the plan was still for Sinner to play in Ohio and try to defend his runner-up spot. But daily progress made it clear it was better not to rush and finish treatment before heading to New York. The decision was finalized yesterday, and the tournament was informed as usual.”

Sinner will spend five or six more days at J Medical to help his knee heal and reduce inflammation. He did another shockwave therapy session today and will continue in the coming days.

“The choice wasn’t easy, but Cincinnati is cancelled for him. This was supposed to be his first event back after Wimbledon, according to the team,” the article added.

The NHS explains that radial shockwave therapy helps with soft tissue and tendon pain by improving blood flow to the area, which reduces chronic pain.

Meanwhile, world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz is also out with a wrist injury and hasn’t played since April’s Barcelona Open.

The US Open will run from August 30 to September 13, with the Cincinnati Open happening earlier from August 13 to 23.
