Mercedes boss gives friendly reminder to George Russell and Kimi Antonelli before F1 comeback
Mercedes’ deputy technical director, Simone Resta, has shared a friendly warning for George Russell and Kimi Antonelli about their chances of winning the F1 world championship.
At the halfway mark of this exciting F1 season, Mercedes is leading the constructors’ championship, thanks mostly to Antonelli’s amazing performance. The 19-year-old has won six of the 11 races so far, with nine podium finishes, including a third place at the recent Hungarian Grand Prix.
Although Mercedes led strongly in the early months, their winning streak ended before the summer break, with five different drivers taking wins in the races leading up to August. Lewis Hamilton is having a strong comeback with Ferrari and is currently 50 points behind Antonelli in the drivers’ championship as he aims for his eighth world title. Ferrari has also closed the gap to 72 points behind Mercedes in the team standings, promising a thrilling second half of the season.
Hamilton is the top challenger to Antonelli’s lead, and Simone Resta has told the Mercedes drivers that the battles will get tougher when racing restarts in Zandvoort on August 23. “History shows that the championship often changes after the summer break,” Resta said. “Pressure grows for the leading teams and their challengers. The environment gets more intense, and every result matters even more. This is when teams show their true strength and resilience.”
Mercedes has lost some ground recently due to reliability issues and closer race speeds from rivals. But Resta reminds everyone there’s still a long way to go before they can celebrate winning their ninth constructors’ championship.
Antonelli has impressed with his bold, aggressive racing style, which has been key to his success. His teammate Russell, who is 59 points behind, has been more calm and steady. Former F1 driver Thierry Boutsen thinks Antonelli’s style is similar to how Russell raced early in his career. “George was just as aggressive in his first season,” Boutsen said. “But he’s learned a lot, become calmer and more mature. I believe Kimi will also race differently in a few years.”
While Antonelli might adjust his style over time, for now his confidence and bravery on track are the secrets behind his amazing season so far.
