Man Utd boss shares his thoughts on fans’ worries about having just two main team signings so far
A senior Manchester United official has addressed the worries about the club’s spending in this summer’s transfer window so far.
United have spent over £70 million to sign midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, who joined from Chelsea and Aston Villa. The club paid Tielemans’ £35 million release clause, and Santos’ deal is thought to start at about £48 million. These signings, along with goalkeeper Karl Darlow arriving on a free transfer, were all announced between July 13 and 14. Since then, no new senior players have joined.
There’s been plenty of talk about possible new signings, with United looking for a left-back to challenge Luke Shaw, and a third central midfielder. Since Michael Carrick’s team will play in the Champions League this season, they definitely need more squad depth. Luckily, Marcus Rashford is back after his loan spell at Barcelona, helping strengthen the attack.
Legendary midfielder Paul Scholes suggested United should bring in another centre-back and thinks Spurs captain Cristian Romero would be a great pick.
With nearly three weeks left before the transfer window closes on September 1, United fans don’t need to panic yet, says a senior club official, according to BBC Sport’s Simon Stone. When asked about the spending concerns, the official simply said, “The club should be judged at the end of the transfer window.”
Stone added in a recent Q&A, “I don’t think Manchester United are finished yet. If they are, they probably won’t be happy with how things turned out. What they’ve done is been good at staying under the radar.”
The need for a new midfielder might become more urgent if Mason Mount misses games due to a foot injury from pre-season. The 27-year-old was taken off as a precaution after getting kicked during a recent friendly against Paris Saint-Germain and is expected to miss the upcoming match against rivals Leeds in Dublin on Wednesday.
