Man Utd fans believe this player could fix their problem spot after the Leeds friendly and might save INEOS £60m
Manchester United fans are excited about one player who they think deserves a chance after his strong first-half showing against Leeds — even though he hasn’t played a competitive match since May 2025.
Michael Carrick’s team kept getting ready for a busy season by playing a pre-season friendly against their rivals Leeds United at Dublin’s Croke Park on Wednesday, August 12.
There were rumors Marcus Rashford might play since he returned to training earlier this week, but he wasn’t included in the squad.
Carrick did pick a solid starting lineup, featuring regulars like Senne Lammens, Diogo Dalot, new signing Andrey Santos, Amad, Patrick Dorgu, Bryan Mbeumo, Joshua Zirkzee, and Leny Yoro. Young players Harry Amass, Tyler Fletcher, and Ayden Heaven also got a chance to play.
Leeds fans got their first look at their record signing, goalkeeper James Trafford, who conceded a goal just 16 minutes in when Zirkzee finished a great move off Mbeumo’s assist.
Leeds quickly equalized before the halfway point, with Brenden Aaronson scoring a cool finish to level the game.
But apart from the stars, it was 19-year-old left-back Harry Amass who earned the most praise during the first half.
Last season, Amass was on loan at Norwich City and Sheffield Wednesday, impressing even though Wednesday got relegated. He joined United’s academy from Watford in 2023 and made his first-team debut on his 18th birthday against Leicester City.
He had his first senior start in April 2025, and his last competitive game for United was in May 2025 against West Ham.
After his performance against Leeds, fans believe he could be a great backup for Luke Shaw at left-back — and even save the club from spending £60 million on transfer target Lewis Hall.
One fan said, “The LB spot is sorted. We don’t need to sign anyone else there anymore. Harry Amass has shown in pre-season that he’s ready.”
Another added, “Who thought selling Harry Amass for £6m was a good idea? He might not be fully there physically yet, but his potential is too big to give up for that.”
A third fan said, “Harry Amass is doing well. Give him a chance this season. Shaw wasn’t much better at his age.”
Another said, “Very impressed with Harry Amass. It’s a shame that starting him in this game might mean the club is trying to sell him.”
One more commented, “Do we really need Lewis Hall after seeing Harry Amass play like that?”
United will face AC Milan in their final pre-season match on August 15 before starting their Premier League season with a game against Hull City on August 22.
