Barcelona cleverly use a smart trick with Ferran Torres to skip paying Man City an extra transfer fee.
Barcelona have made a clever move to avoid paying Manchester City a big fee by handling Ferran Torres’ transfer to Paris Saint-Germain smartly. Torres is at the peak of his career, having scored the winning goal for Spain in the 2026 World Cup final against Argentina.
Even though Torres helped Barcelona win La Liga last season with 21 goals in 49 games, the club decided not to renew his contract. For a while, he has been linked to a move to PSG, and The Athletic reported on August 13 that the two clubs agreed on a £42.7 million deal.
This transfer won’t include extra fees, and the official announcement is expected soon. By not renewing Torres’ contract, Barcelona may have saved a lot of money. If they had renewed, they would have had to pay Manchester City £6.8 million because of a clause from when they signed Torres for £47.3 million in January 2022. Also, selling Torres for £42.7 million lets Barcelona skip an £8.6 million sell-on fee to City.
Torres scored 63 goals and assisted 23 times in 207 games for Barcelona. With his departure and Robert Lewandowski leaving for Chicago Fire, Barcelona now need to find a new striker. Coach Hansi Flick said earlier in August that they might have to wait before signing players.
He mentioned that young player Lamine Yamal has shown promise playing in the striker role and called him world-class. He also pointed out that Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi can play as forwards or strikers, giving the team several options.
Barcelona are still interested in Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez and Manchester City’s Rodri. This summer, they already signed Gordon from Newcastle, Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund, and Jesse Bisiwi from Club NXT. The transfer window closes on September 1.
