Man Utd fans want star player to be sold after AC Milan game as main problem spotted
Many Manchester United fans have called for the club to sell a key player after his disappointing performance in Michael Carrick’s team during their 4-2 pre-season friendly loss to AC Milan.
Ruben Amorim faced United for the first time since he left the club in January. The Portuguese coach must be happy with his team’s strong play as they controlled the game and secured a clear win over the Red Devils.
United started well, with Harry Maguire scoring a header just two minutes in during the match in Wroclaw, Poland. But Samuel Chukwueze equalized for Milan in the 37th minute. United took the lead again through Patrick Dorgu six minutes after the break.
After that, Amorim’s team dominated, looking fitter and more confident with the ball. Milan tied the game at 2-2 through Alphadjo Cisse in the 57th minute, then summer signing Goncalo Ramos made it 3-2 with about 20 minutes left. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, a former Chelsea and England midfielder, sealed the win for Milan with a fourth goal 19 minutes from the end.
Several United players faced criticism, including Luke Shaw, who was one of five players to play the full 90 minutes alongside Maguire, Senne Lammens, Youri Tielemans, and captain Bruno Fernandes.
The captain, Fernandes, received the most criticism after the match. Some fans even suggested the club should sell him, despite him winning the FWA Footballer of the Year award last season. Fernandes also missed a penalty for the second time in a week, equalizing at 1-1. He previously missed a spot-kick against Leeds United in a shootout on August 12.
One fan said: “If you watched our last two pre-season games, we controlled and dominated possession. Then Bruno Fernandes came back and suddenly we forgot how to play football.” Another added: “I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. No tactic works with Bruno Fernandes on the pitch. He doesn’t follow instructions, disrupts the press, struggles to keep the ball, and plays too urgently. We won’t win anything big with him.”
A third fan commented: “I’ve praised Bruno, but he needs to accept he’s not the hero saving United anymore. There’s quality in this team, so he should share or get benched.” Another wrote: “Time to sell Bruno—not because of the missed penalty, but because he’s too reckless and often loses the ball. We can’t play possession football with him.”
A fifth fan shared: “Bruno Fernandes played 90 minutes today, and the only times I noticed him were when he missed the penalty and when he sent long balls outside the pitch.”
Despite these opinions, United probably won’t sell their captain and main attacking player anytime soon, as the 31-year-old is contracted until 2027. Marcus Rashford returned after loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona, coming on as a substitute in the 61st minute.
United will kick off their Premier League season with a trip to newly-promoted Hull City on August 22.
