Man Utd is getting close to signing a big midfielder out of the blue, with David Ornstein sharing a surprising transfer update.
Manchester United is getting closer to signing Carlos Baleba, a player they’ve wanted for a while, according to a surprising update from David Ornstein on Wednesday morning.
This summer’s transfer window has been pretty quiet so far, with Michael Carrick adding only three new players to a team expected to compete on all fronts this season. They’ve signed Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos for a combined £85 million from Aston Villa and Chelsea, and Karl Darlow came in on a free from Leeds United as a backup goalkeeper.
Carrick recently said he wants to bring in two or three more players before the September 1 deadline, including one more midfielder.
Now, it looks like United are close to strengthening their midfield, as Ornstein revealed that they’re nearing a deal for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. The club has made an offer of £60 million plus £5 million in extras for the Cameroon midfielder, though Brighton might want a bit more. Still, talks are friendly, and it seems an agreement might happen soon, making Baleba their fourth signing this summer.
Baleba has been on United’s radar for a while—they tried to sign him last summer, but Brighton’s high £100 million price stopped things from moving forward. The player himself has wanted the move to Old Trafford, and since his contract lasts until June 2028, Brighton might be ready to sell before his value drops.
With Manuel Ugarte injured long-term and Casemiro leaving this summer, United have needed a strong defensive midfielder to protect the defence. Tielemans adds creativity and Santos brings speed and energy, but Carrick has wanted someone who can act as a shield. Baleba would be perfect for that.
He’s known for his tough tackling and aggressive style. Last season, he was in the top 16% of Premier League players for ball recoveries and top 13% for interceptions. Baleba would add strength in the midfield and help United avoid getting caught on counter-attacks. His teammate Pascal Gross praised him highly, saying, “Carlos is so talented and gives so much to the team. When he’s in the right position, his physical play is hard to beat. If he stays focused, no one can outplay him, and what he can do with the ball is amazing.”
It looks like Baleba could be a great fit for Manchester United, giving them a stronger and more balanced midfield this season.
