EFL star scores goal with clever move that goalkeeper didn’t see coming
Crewe Alexandra’s star Josh March scored the winning goal in their 1-0 win over Northampton with a clever trick on the goalkeeper. The Railwaymen are off to a perfect start in League Two, winning both their first games. They beat nine-man Crawley Town 1-0 last weekend, and then secured this home win on Saturday.
In the 54th minute, Northampton goalkeeper Zach Jeacock saved a low shot from Calum Agius and held on to the ball. After taking a few steps forward and about to put the ball down, March suddenly ran back onto the pitch. No one saw him coming as he snatched the ball and scored into the empty net.
Northampton’s defenders weren’t happy and complained, but the goal stood and ended up being the only one of the match.
According to the rules, opponents have to stay outside the penalty area until the ball is in play, which happens the moment the ball is kicked and clearly moves. Jeacock controlled the ball, then moved it forward, so the ball was live. March’s quick thinking caught everyone off guard.
While the Northampton keeper was unaware of March, teammate James Maxwell was frantically pointing to warn him. Jon Guthrie joined in trying to stop the goal, but it was too late. The referee and assistants were asked to review it, but March was already celebrating the brilliant goal!
