Anthony Gordon breaks La Liga record in his first game for Barcelona after coming on as a substitute
Anthony Gordon made a huge splash in his Barcelona debut by breaking a long-standing La Liga record in just six minutes. Although he started on the bench for Barca’s first league game against Elche on Sunday, with new signing Karim Adeyemi starting ahead of him, Gordon soon showed why he’s a star.
After coming on for Adeyemi early in the second half, Gordon quickly set up Raphinha’s goal, making it 3-0. Just four minutes later, he made another perfect pass to Fermin Lopez, who easily scored to make it 4-0. This made Gordon the first player in the 21st century to provide two assists in his La Liga debut.
The 26-year-old is clearly loving life at Barcelona. After their 5-0 win over Elche, he shared how welcome he feels. “It was the perfect start,” he said. “We scored five goals and didn’t let any in. I’m really happy with how we played, the great goals, and how well the defenders worked hard too.”
Gordon added, “I feel really good since I got here. The team made me feel at home right away, the city is amazing, people are so friendly, and I’m sure I’ll keep improving the longer I stay.”
He also praised teammate Adeyemi, who’s expected to challenge him for a starting spot. “It’s always about the team first here. Big congrats to Kareem for his great game and his first goal. He worked hard, especially in defense, so I’m really happy for him.”
Earlier this month, coach Hansi Flick shared how excited Gordon was to join Barca from the start. “From our first call, you could tell how much he wanted to come here. I’m very glad he’s with us,” Flick said.
Gordon will look to play again when Barcelona host Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, August 27. Fans can’t wait to see more from him!
