Harvey Elliott’s tough time at Liverpool is finally over as he’s agreed to join a big club
Harvey Elliott has agreed to leave Liverpool, ending what has been a tough time for him since returning.
It’s been a rough year for Elliott. Last September, he joined Aston Villa on loan because he felt he wasn’t getting enough game time at Liverpool and didn’t want to waste any more years on the bench. The deal was supposed to last the whole season, with an option to buy for £35 million if he played 10 Premier League games.
But things didn’t go as planned. Elliott only played four Premier League matches for Villa, plus a few more in other competitions, partly due to injuries and team decisions. So, he came back to Liverpool for the 2026/27 season, with his future up in the air—no one was sure if he’d stay at Anfield under the new coach, Andoni Iraola, or move again.
Now, it’s official: Elliott will join Spanish club Valencia on a season-long loan. Valencia, who finished ninth in La Liga last season, will pay most of his salary, and he’s set for a medical soon, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Some reports said Elliott’s Liverpool contract was ending next summer, which would mean Liverpool risked losing him for free. But that’s not true. He’s actually signed with Liverpool until 2028, so after a year with Valencia, he can either return to fight for his place or be sold permanently.
Elliott showed promise during pre-season under Iraola, but surprisingly, he was left out of the squads for recent Premier League games against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. Iraola explained, “I can only pick 20 players. Harvey is working hard and improving, but I still prefer other options for the bench. It’s a new week, a new chance for everyone—they have to keep that mindset.”
Liverpool and Valencia have until 11 PM BST on Tuesday, September 1—the end of the summer transfer window—to complete the move.
