Liverpool interested in unexpected Premier League winger as Cody Gakpo nears £85m move to Man City
Liverpool might be planning a surprise move for a top Premier League winger as Cody Gakpo’s future seems pretty clear. With less than 36 hours left in the summer transfer window for 2026/27, Liverpool are keeping busy with some big deals.
In just one hour, Andoni Iraola’s team signed TWO new players—a goalkeeper and a forward—on the second-to-last day of the window. Plus, a huge deal to bring in Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, worth up to £123 million, is expected to be announced soon.
But it’s not just about bringing players in. Some key players might still leave Anfield before the window closes Tuesday night. The biggest name linked with a move is winger Cody Gakpo, who has been strongly connected with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City this transfer window.
Right now, it looks more likely that Gakpo, who has scored once and assisted once in Liverpool’s first two Premier League games, will join Manchester City. They’ve started talks with Liverpool about a deal worth around £85 million. Since Liverpool bought Gakpo for just £35 million from PSV Eindhoven in 2022, a £50 million profit would be great business, but it might leave Liverpool a bit short in attack for the rest of the season.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk made it clear he isn’t keen on selling his teammate. After a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, he said, “He’s a quality player. I think we should keep quality players. I want him to stay—not just because he’s a great player but also because he’s a friend and very important for us.”
It’s believed that with the arrival of Victor Munoz, the rise of Rio Ngumoha, and Barcola’s upcoming signing, Gakpo might want to move to City because he worries he won’t be a first-choice player at Liverpool.
If Liverpool do sell Gakpo to City or any other club this summer, they’ll only do it if they have a strong replacement ready. So far, they’ve shown interest in Crystal Palace’s Ismalia Sarr and Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh, but bids for both were recently turned down.
Now, it looks like Liverpool might have a new winger target in Chelsea’s Estevao. According to The Guardian and French journalist Francois Planteau, the 19-year-old is a “dream target” for Liverpool. Chelsea, however, don’t want to sell him. Still, Liverpool are thinking about making an official offer to see how Chelsea reacts.
Last season, Estevao scored eight goals and had four assists in 36 games across all competitions, making him an exciting prospect for Liverpool.
