Enzo Fernandez speaks out after receiving criticism following his big record-making move to Man City.
Enzo Fernandez has shared a message directly with Chelsea fans who criticized him for joining Manchester City, in an official statement.
The 2026/27 Premier League transfer window has now closed, after one of the busiest summers in recent years. The British transfer record was broken twice this summer, first when Manchester City spent £116 million on Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, and then when Chelsea signed Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million.
In fact, in the final hours of the window, Premier League clubs broke their all-time summer transfer record with a total spend of £3.198 billion. But that number doesn’t include the biggest move of the summer—just before the deadline, Manchester City announced a £125 million deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
Fernandez, a World Cup winner, was keen to make this move all summer. He wanted to join his former Chelsea manager, now City’s boss, Enzo Maresca. This decision upset some fans.
In his first statement since the transfer, Fernandez addressed the criticism, highlighting how “passionate” the fans are. He said, “Life is about making decisions, and right now I have to make a tough one. I’ve said it before, but I want to say it again: I’ve grown very fond of this club. Chelsea will always be in my thoughts and, most importantly, my heart.
“But I also know how football works. I understand how passionate you are because I feel the same way. If I were in your shoes, I’d probably feel the same.”
Despite this, many Chelsea fans reacted strongly on social media, with some calling Fernandez a “snake” and saying he was selfish. His Instagram post was filled with snake emojis.
In his heartfelt message, Fernandez wrote:
“Dear Chelsea,
These past days have been very hard for me, and writing this isn’t easy either. Three years ago, Cobham and Stamford Bridge became home for me and my family. I grew close to the people, the shirt, and the badge of this amazing club.
From day one, I became passionate about winning and bringing every trophy this club deserves. We went through tough times, celebrations, and unforgettable moments together.
I live football with all my heart, just like I live my life. I want you to know I truly understand how you feel.
But life means making tough choices, and right now, I’ve had to make one. Chelsea will always have a special place in my heart.
I want to thank everyone – the staff, coaches, medical team, physios, and all who work at Cobham and the club.
To my teammates over the years, thank you for sharing so many moments with me. I was truly happy here and wish you all the best.
Thank you for all the love and support you and your families have given me. I will never forget it.
This team has many bright moments ahead, and I will be happy for you always.
You will always be in my heart, Blues. I wish you nothing but the best.

Fernandez could make his Manchester City debut as early as Saturday, when Coventry City visits the Etihad Stadium for the Premier League’s third matchweek.
