PSG star ends contract just hours before the transfer deadline
PSG has been really busy this summer, working hard to improve the team under Luis Enrique and aiming to win their third Champions League in a row. They’ve signed some big-name players like Maghnes Akliouche, Ferran Torres, and Mika Godts.
But the big headline from their transfer window has been how much money they made from selling players—they’ve brought in a record €360 million for those leaving the club. Some of the players who left Paris include Bradley Barcola, who went to Liverpool, Ibrahim Mbaye, now at Aston Villa, and Goncalo Ramos, who moved to AC Milan.
Even though €360 million is a huge amount, it’s worth mentioning that PSG let four players go for free before the transfer deadline. That number has now increased to five after saying goodbye to another important player: a European Championship winner who was also named Young Player of the Tournament.
Just hours before the deadline, it was reported that Renato Sanches ended his contract with PSG, according to Record Portugal. The 29-year-old won the European Championship with Portugal in 2016 but had a tough time at PSG over the past four years. Injuries and loan spells made it hard for him to secure regular playing time.
Sanches joined PSG in 2022 from Lille, where he had won the Ligue 1 title, and went on to win the French league again with Paris in 2023. However, after his first season, he spent three years on loan at Roma, Benfica, and Panathinaikos, playing just 31 games between Italy, Portugal, and Greece.
Ending his contract now might be just what Sanches needs to give his career a fresh start. Recently, there were rumors about him possibly joining Sevilla in La Liga, and as a free agent, that move could be a lot easier for both the club and him. At 29, he has a chance to get back on track and fulfill the promise he showed earlier in his career.
