While many Premier League teams rushed to finish deals before the window closed, Liverpool didn’t add any more first-team players in the last hours. Manager Andoni Iraola has already brought in four players this summer, including a huge £123 million signing of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain. He joined Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz, and Ronald Araujo, who all moved to Merseyside earlier.
The Reds were looking for a third winger after signing Munoz and Barcola but missed out on Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh and Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr, which was a bit frustrating. Also, after stopping Cody Gakpo’s move to Manchester City—despite him agreeing to personal terms—it looks like no new forwards will arrive now. Fans hoped for a new central midfielder and a full-back too, but instead, Liverpool have focused on a future goalkeeper prospect.
On the evening of September 1, Liverpool announced the signing of 18-year-old goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans from KRC Genk. He signed a long-term contract and will cost up to £30 million, making him the most expensive teenage goalkeeper ever—beating offers from clubs like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Brughmans, a tall 6ft 7in Belgian, is seen as one of Europe’s best young goalkeepers. He’ll stay on loan at Genk for the rest of the 2026/27 season, then join Liverpool ahead of the 2027/28 campaign.
This signing affects Mamardashvili’s spot at Liverpool, both now and in the future. Nottingham Forest showed interest in Mamardashvili over the weekend, but nothing has moved forward. The 25-year-old seems likely to stay as backup to Alisson Becker for now.
Brughmans arriving on loan means he won’t challenge Mamardashvili immediately, so the club appears happy to keep Mamardashvili as an option for Iraola. Mamardashvili joined Liverpool from Valencia in 2025, and his contract runs until 2031, but he may not be part of Liverpool’s long-term plans.
That could change depending on how Brughmans does when he returns next summer. With Alisson’s contract ending next year, Brughmans could become the first-choice keeper. Liverpool might also sign a more experienced goalkeeper, with Brughmans as backup. If that happens, Mamardashvili might be the one to leave. He has made 20 appearances for Liverpool so far across all competitions.
