UEFA starts investigation into Mason Greenwood as Fenerbahce issues a statement
UEFA has started looking into Mason Greenwood’s behavior during Fenerbahce’s big Champions League win over Lyon.
Back in August, Turkish club Fenerbahce grabbed an important 2-1 win against Lyon at the Groupama Stadium in France. This win helped them move on in the Champions League with a 3-2 score overall.
The match was intense, but things really heated up after the final whistle. Fenerbahce’s Matteo Guendouzi, who used to play for Marseille (Lyon’s rivals), got the French fans worked up. As he was leaving the field, his actions caused chaos on the pitch and in the tunnel. Someone wearing what looked like a Lyon tracksuit even tried to kick him.
Mason Greenwood, the ex-Manchester United player who joined Fenerbahce this summer from Marseille on a four-year deal, was right in the middle of this mess with Guendouzi.
Fenerbahce later shared a statement saying UEFA has officially opened an investigation into both Guendouzi and Greenwood’s actions after the match. The club also said they will defend their players and the team during this process and will keep everyone updated.
It’s not clear yet what punishments might come, but players could face match bans or fines. The club might also get fined or face restrictions on tickets for away fans.
After the game, Guendouzi explained his side, saying he was ‘disrespected’ by the home fans. He shared, “When 60,000 people insult your family, your mum, your kids, even before the game starts – and the refs don’t make them stop – it really hurts. In France, they would usually stop the match for that kind of thing. For the whole game, including warm-up, they were insulting my family. That’s not okay.”
Fenerbahce’s coach stood by both players, saying, “We all stood by Guendouzi as a team. That’s what teamwork means.”
Fenerbahce will kick off their Champions League journey by hosting Roma at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on September 10.
