Ruben Amorim is about to make AC Milan history, something that has only happened once before at Man Utd.
Ruben Amorim is getting close to making history at AC Milan—a feat no Milan coach has managed since 1956. He took charge this summer after the club and Massimiliano Allegri went their separate ways. Last season, Milan missed out on the Champions League and scored just 53 goals in Serie A, a problem that sometimes came up with Allegri’s teams.
Amorim, starting his first job since leaving Manchester United in January, has been given the big task of bringing Milan back to the top of European football. And he’s off to a great start! Milan have won both of their opening Serie A games so far—beating Torino 2-1 and Venezia 2-0 at San Siro.
This weekend, Amorim could make history by becoming the first Milan coach since 1958 to win his first three matches in charge. Big-name managers like Carlo Ancelotti, Fabio Capello, and Arrigo Sacchi never pulled it off. The last was Giuseppe Viani, who won his first three games in the 1956/57 season and then went on to win the Serie A title despite a couple of losses early on.
But Amorim has a tough challenge ahead—Milan will face Juventus in Turin on Sunday. Juventus, while not as strong as they once were, have won their two league matches this season without letting in a goal under coach Luciano Spalletti. Right now, Juventus, Milan, and a few other top teams like Atalanta, Lazio, Inter Milan, and Roma all have perfect records after two matches.
Milan made some big signings this summer, including splitting a club-record €70 million to bring striker Goncalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain. They also spent €45 million plus €20 million in bonuses on winger Diego Moreira from Strasbourg, and Omari Hutchinson joined on loan from Nottingham Forest. They sold Rafael Leao to Galatasaray for €45 million, but overall, Milan look stronger than last season.
Before the win against Venezia, Amorim shared what he hopes for this season: “We need to give the team stability and build a style of play that keeps everyone involved. We want to be competitive in Serie A and Europe.” He added that players need to be ready to adapt depending on the opponent and that staying focused is key.
He said, “We can’t just concentrate in big matches and then let our attention slip against teams seen as easier. We have to treat every opponent like they’re the best team in the world. If we stay focused, we can beat anyone. If not, we risk even losing to a lower division side.”
