Coventry City announces signing three days after transfer deadline thanks to a little-known FIFA rule.
Coventry City have happily announced the signing of winger Yann Gboho from Ligue 1 club Toulouse, just three days after the transfer window closed. This surprise move made Gboho the 12th and final new player for Coventry’s Premier League squad.
The French player has signed a long-term deal with the Sky Blues after a potential move to MLS side Kansas City didn’t happen. He was registered in time to join the team for their game against Manchester City on Saturday.
According to Daily Mail journalist Tom Collomosse, Coventry agreed the deal with Toulouse before the September 1 deadline, but FIFA had to check all the paperwork before giving the final approval. Once FIFA ratified the transfer and the UK Visa was approved, it gave a big boost to manager Frank Lampard’s plans to keep the team in the Premier League.
Gboho comes with great experience, having scored 19 goals and assisted 12 times over two and a half years in France. He’s expected to bring some much-needed energy and skill to Coventry’s attack.
It’s been a tough start to the season for the Sky Blues, with a 3-0 loss at Arsenal and a recent defeat against Hull City. The team has struggled to score, and Gboho’s speed, control, and finishing ability could really help change that.
He’ll challenge current left winger Ephron Mason-Clark for a place, and his flexibility means he can also contribute in central or right-sided positions.
Ligue 1 has become known for developing talented players, and Gboho fits that description well. As a former France U18 international, he’s shown he can be a key playmaker, often playing just behind the striker or cutting in from the left.
Last season, Gboho ranked in the top seven percent for successful dribbles per game and top 14 percent for winning fouls, showing his impact in attack. He also worked hard defensively, ranking well in recoveries and possession won in the final third.
Coventry will need plenty of grit this season, and Gboho has already shown he’s willing to help out defensively.
He could make his debut for Coventry against Manchester City or at their home game versus Brighton next Sunday.
