Liverpool and Man Utd are still keeping an eye on the Championship star, even after missing out in the last days of the transfer window.
Manchester United and Liverpool have been big fans of Wolves winger Mateus Mane for a while now, and it’s said that he might have left Molineux at the end of the transfer window. Last season was tough for Wolves, ending in relegation, but Mane was a bright spot during a challenging time.
Mane made his Premier League debut in May 2025 in a 2-0 loss to Brighton. The 18-year-old quickly became a regular player, appearing 27 times in the 2025/26 season and getting involved in five goals. His speed and skill on the wing naturally caught the attention of bigger clubs.
Both Liverpool and Manchester United kept a close eye on the Portugal under-21 international last season. According to TEAMtalk, they even had talks about possibly signing the young star. Liverpool looked into signing him permanently or maybe buying him and then loaning him back to Wolves. However, Wolves were clear that Mane wasn’t for sale and wouldn’t let him go.
Importantly, Mane himself wasn’t pushing to leave—unlike many young players—but he was open if Wolves agreed to a move. His team thinks the best way for him to grow is by getting regular first-team play in the Championship rather than joining a big club where he might end up in the academy or out on loan.
So far this season, Mane has started all four of Wolves’ opening games in the Championship under new manager Cesar Peixoto, although he hasn’t scored or assisted yet. Meanwhile, United, Liverpool, and other clubs continue to follow his progress closely. He’s also attracting interest from top Portuguese clubs like Porto, Sporting, and Benfica.
Last season, Mane stood out by showing no fear on the pitch, confidently carrying the ball forward and trying to make things happen. He also proved to be a sharp shooter, with all three of his Premier League goals coming from long range — including a powerful strike against Fulham near the end of the season.
In fact, Mane became only the second Portuguese teenager to score three or more Premier League goals from outside the box in one season, matching a record set by Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2003/04. Ronaldo, who joined Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon in 2003, quickly became one of the most exciting young talents in the world, scoring four goals and assisting four in his debut season.
And we all know how that story ended — Ronaldo grew into one of the greatest players ever and is now chasing an amazing milestone of 1,000 professional goals.
