Aaron Ramsdale’s career hits a new low as fans point to the moment that changed it all
Aaron Ramsdale was an important part of Arsenal’s transfer plans back in the summer of 2021 when Mikel Arteta was putting together a team to go for the Premier League title.
After being their main goalkeeper for two seasons, Ramsdale lost his spot when Arsenal signed David Raya, who became the first-choice keeper. Raya played a big role in Arsenal winning the Premier League in 2026.
Ramsdale didn’t want to just sit on the bench, so he moved to Southampton in 2024 looking for more game time. Unfortunately, things haven’t gone well for him there, and his career has hit a rough patch.
Southampton signed him for £25 million after coming up to the Premier League, but the team got relegated to the Championship that season. The next year, Ramsdale went on loan to Newcastle United, but they didn’t keep him permanently. Now, he’s back at Southampton, where the manager, Tonda Eckert, said to BBC Radio Solent that Ramsdale is actually their fourth-choice goalkeeper.
Eckert said, “Ramsdale joined before I came here. We’ve been honest from the start, and he’s still part of the squad. He’s been professional and is there to support the team. Also, he just became a dad again, and as of now, he’s a Southampton player.”
Ramsdale, now 30, still has a chance to leave before the Saudi Arabian transfer window closes on Sunday. If he stays, he’ll be behind Daniel Peretz, George Long, and Jamie Jones in the pecking order.
Some fans think Ramsdale would be in a much better place if he had stayed at Arsenal as the backup keeper. They believe leaving Arsenal for a team likely to fight relegation was a mistake and the turning point in his once promising career.
But Ramsdale made his feelings clear after leaving Arsenal in an interview with BBC One’s Football Focus. He said, “If I was just sitting on the bench, winning a trophy wouldn’t mean much to me. As a kid, I just wanted to play football, not watch from the sidelines. Playing was my goal, and I’m happy I found that opportunity here at Southampton.”
