New footage has come out showing what happened after the clash between Morgan Rogers and Declan Rice, something Sky Sports didn’t catch on camera. The two England teammates got into a heated argument during the Arsenal vs. Chelsea game.
Rogers scored the first goal, but got upset when Rice tripped him during a Chelsea counter-attack. The referee, Chris Kavanagh, didn’t call a foul and gave Arsenal a goal kick instead after Cole Palmer missed a shot. When Rogers got up, he shoved Rice, and both players had to be separated by their teammates. Rogers got a yellow card for his reaction, but Rice wasn’t punished.
Fan footage from the stands showed that Rogers wasn’t interested in making peace. Rice tried to talk to him calmly, but Rogers ignored him and walked back to his spot. Later, Rogers was taken off the field in the 87th minute and replaced by Danny Welbeck, while some Arsenal fans taunted him with chants like, “You should have signed for a big club.” Rogers smiled as he heard them.
Commentator Gary Neville was surprised Rice didn’t get called for the trip, saying, “I can’t believe the referee didn’t see it.” Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey agreed, explaining that Rice should have received a yellow card, and the assistant referee might have been better placed to spot it. Unfortunately, VAR can’t step in for yellow card offenses like this.
Halsey told The Sun, “Morgan Rogers made a great run, but Declan Rice clearly tripped him. The referee missed it, and Rogers wasn’t happy. Rogers acted aggressively and got a yellow card, but really Rice should have been cautioned first. It’s unlucky for Rogers, but that’s how it goes sometimes.”
