Alan Shearer ends the Harry Kane debate with a clear pick for the better striker

Alan Shearer has ended the ongoing striker debate between himself and Harry Kane by sharing what he thinks sets them apart.

Shearer still holds the record for the most Premier League goals with 260. Kane, after some impressive seasons at Spurs, reached 213 goals, chasing that record closely. But his move to Bayern Munich in 2023 paused that chase, letting him win big trophies and get the recognition he deserves.

By 2026, Kane has scored 74 goals for club and country and is a strong favorite for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.

So, who’s the better striker overall—Shearer or Kane?

Shearer, a Newcastle United legend, was asked to compare himself with Kane in different skills before picking an overall winner.

For finishing, Shearer chose himself, saying he worked hard on that skill for years. He said, “It’s tough to say while he’s still playing and scoring loads, but I back myself on finishing. I practiced it a lot, both before and during my career.”

For heading, Shearer also picked himself. But when it came to vision—Kane’s ability to drop deep, pick up the ball, and make clever passes—Shearer gave Kane the edge. “Harry Kane is brilliant at seeing runs and making those passes,” he said.

On ‘touch,’ it was a tie. Shearer joked, “With my right foot, me. With the left foot, him. So 50/50 there.”

Kane got an easy win for dribbling. Shearer admitted, “I wasn’t a dribbler. I wanted others to put the ball in the box for me, so Harry Kane wins that one.”

For football IQ, they were again equal in Shearer’s eyes. He said, “Understanding the game, knowing when and how to run and pass—all important. So I’ll split that one down the middle.”

After a tie in most categories, Shearer made his final call. He happily gave the overall nod to Kane, who could become England’s first Ballon d’Or winner since Michael Owen in 2001.

“As he’s still playing and breaking records, and could win the Ballon d’Or, I’ll give it to Harry,” Shearer said.

Kane has reached 10th place in the Ballon d’Or rankings three times but is the favorite for this year. Other top contenders include 2024 winner Rodri, who captained Spain to World Cup glory, and French star Kylian Mbappe.

Shearer firmly believes Kane deserves the award and to join England greats like Owen, Stanley Matthews, Kevin Keegan, and Bobby Charlton.

He explained, “For the 2026 Ballon d’Or, Harry Kane gets my vote. He scored loads of goals last year, won the Bundesliga, and a cup. Although England didn’t have the World Cup success he wanted, Kane’s overall season was amazing.

“Mbappé would be behind him, and Rodri, who was player of the tournament at the World Cup, would be another top contender.”
