Bruno Fernandes has shared why Manchester United decided to keep Marcus Rashford during the summer transfer window.
Rashford came back to Old Trafford for pre-season after Barcelona chose not to activate a buy option following his season-long loan last year. He has started United’s last two Premier League matches, showing a great performance in the 2-2 draw with Everton, before being rested for the 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah. Fernandes, United’s captain, talked about what the team thinks of him.
In a new interview with Sky Sports, Fernandes was asked who arrives earliest at training. He said, “Usually, it’s Diogo [Dalot]. He’s always the first here. This season, Rashy and Ben [Sesko] have also been getting in early, along with me. Of course, it depends — sometimes I drop my kids off at school, so I get here early after that. But mostly, Diogo is already here!”
This shows why Rashford’s return has been so positive, both for his attitude and his performances. The Sun reported that a source said Rashford “couldn’t have done much more” with his attitude and effort since returning to the club.
The 28-year-old also had a strong World Cup with England, and he thanked England’s manager Thomas Tuchel for “believing in me,” especially after he was left out by Ruben Amorim at United.
United head coach Michael Carrick, who used to play with Rashford, has praised him several times since he came back this summer. Rashford didn’t play against Sabah on Thursday, but Carrick explained it wasn’t about tactics or form — he just wanted to “keep Marcus fresh for the weekend.” This means Rashford is expected to start when United face Manchester City in the first derby of the 2026/27 season at Old Trafford on Sunday.
After the Sabah game, Carrick said, “Really pleased with Marcus in many ways. He was a real threat on Sunday, unlucky not to score more. We’re just really happy to have him. He’s doing great and has settled in quickly. It was good to keep him fresh for the weekend.”
