Como president shares Cesc Fabregas’ amazing game day routine in an interesting podcast clip
Cesc Fabregas’s rise to becoming one of the top football coaches makes a lot of sense, especially after Como’s president shared his amazing game-day routine.
Fabregas started his coaching journey at Como after playing, then working as a youth coach, assistant manager, and interim boss. After helping the team move up from Italy’s Serie B, he was made head coach in July 2024 with a four-year contract.
He quickly made an impact, leading Como to 10th place in Serie A—their best finish since 1987. Then, last season, he took them even further, guiding Como to fourth place and qualifying for the Champions League for the first time ever.
This season, Como is already third after four games and impressively beat RB Leipzig 4-1 in their first European match. With Fabregas being linked to many top coaching jobs, Como’s president Mirwan Suwarso revealed something special about how he prepares for matches.
Before every game, Fabregas writes up a detailed plan and sends it to the board. This helps the owners understand his tactics and the reasons behind the decisions on the pitch. Suwarso explained on the Business of Sport podcast, “Cesc actually writes a game plan that he submits 24 hours before every match. The owners can watch the game knowing what to look for, like why a striker might not be scoring because he’s creating space for others.”
Fabregas breaks down things like how the team builds up play, who’s covering space, and what runs players make. After the game, he writes a report on how the match went compared to his predictions, while Como’s data team also provides their own analysis. Suwarso added, “We share all the information, so if we play a team that uses a low block defense, we can see if we performed better than expected even if we didn’t score.”
Though Fabregas is starting his coaching career in Italy instead of Spain, he’s already brought a style similar to the best teams he played for during his career. Suwarso mentioned that Napoli and two other clubs showed interest in Fabregas, and he was also linked to Chelsea. Reports say Barcelona might see him as a future long-term coach after Hansi Flick.
In June, Fabregas’s former teammate Ashley Cole, who recently coached in Italy, praised him highly. He told SPORTbible, “Cesc is definitely one of the best young coaches out there. He’s very smart tactically and adapts his style depending on the opponent. He’s ahead of the curve but needs time and support to reach the top.”
Overall, Fabregas is proving that he has the talent and mindset to be one of football’s best coaches in the years to come.
