Man United wanted Michael Carrick’s replacement, but the manager said no.
Manchester United’s top choice to replace Michael Carrick is actually a manager they turned down a few years ago, according to reports. Carrick stayed on after a great run as caretaker manager at the end of last season, helping the Red Devils finish third and get back into the Champions League.
But this season hasn’t started well, with just one win in four games. United lost to Hull City and their rivals Manchester City in Sunday’s derby. They also drew with Everton. Their only win so far was a 5-2 victory against newly promoted Ipswich Town.
An Italian report says United might rethink Carrick’s future because of the slow start. Antonio Conte is said to be at the top of their shortlist, according to the Corriere della Sera newspaper. Conte is currently waiting for offers after leaving Napoli last season. He’s thinking about managing again after winning lots of trophies, including six league titles.
In England, Conte won the Premier League and FA Cup with Chelsea and also managed Spurs before moving on. He’s been linked to the United job several times but talks never got far. In 2021, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was under pressure, Conte was interested in the role, even mid-season, which is unusual for him. However, United’s officials weren’t sure about hiring him.
The Independent reported that United had doubts about Conte’s style, worried it might cause problems like when Jose Mourinho was manager. Mourinho was accused of creating a tough atmosphere that needed fixing. Conte is known for being direct and outspoken, often criticizing players and owners. He also tends to leave clubs quickly.
Instead of Conte, United hired caretaker Ralf Rangnick, who openly talked about the club’s problems. Later, Erik ten Hag became the permanent manager, while Conte took on the Spurs job. Conte left Spurs in March 2023 after a fiery press conference where he called out his players and the club’s mindset, leading to his exit by mutual agreement.
United will be back in action on Wednesday for their Carabao Cup third-round game against Brighton.
