Formula 1 fans are buzzing with excitement after the 2027 race calendar was announced.
The big change? Sprint races are increasing from six to 10 next year! For the first time, sprint races will take place at the Monaco Grand Prix, along with Bahrain, Australia, Japan, and Abu Dhabi. These shorter races will also happen in Canada, Britain, Italy, Brazil, and Qatar.
The 2027 season kicks off in Bahrain from March 12-14, followed by Saudi Arabia the next week. However, both races might be uncertain because of ongoing unrest in the Middle East. The season will wrap up with races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, but backup plans are already being made in case those can’t happen due to the conflict involving Iran.
Portugal and Turkey are back on the calendar after replacing other events during the pandemic, and the British Grand Prix is set for July 2-4.
The big talk among fans is about having so many sprint races. Organizers like them because an extra day of racing can mean more ticket sales and money. But many are puzzled by the decision to have a sprint race in Monaco, since the narrow streets make overtaking really tough, and the cars rarely hit their top speeds.
Monaco is still one of the most popular race weekends, offering two qualifying sessions, but the sprint race there might not add much excitement because passing is so limited.
One fan tweeted, “Monaco Sprint Race… they’ve lost their minds…,” while another joked, “That’s what happens when you’ve got a bank account instead of a brain.”
