Real Madrid’s plan for JJ Gabriel becomes clear if they bring him in from Man Utd.
Reports say Real Madrid is ready to give JJ Gabriel a chance to play senior football if they sign him from Manchester United, by starting him in their Castilla team. Gabriel surprised Manchester United’s bosses on Tuesday by saying he wants to end his contract and leave the club.
The 15-year-old has caught the eye of many big European clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain.
Gabriel and his team are reportedly unhappy with how he’s been developing and the chances he’s had with Manchester United’s first team. He hasn’t played a senior match yet, but was expected to start in United’s Carabao Cup game against Brighton on Wednesday.
Gabriel has three choices: stay at United, join another Premier League team, or move to a club abroad. Staying in the Premier League isn’t simple. Gabriel can leave United when he turns 16 in October and join another Premier League club—but not Chelsea, since they are banned from signing academy players until December.
There’s a rule that lets European clubs sign Gabriel before his 16th birthday if he has dual nationality—his mother is Greek Cypriot.
According to ESPN, Real Madrid feels confident about signing Gabriel and has already planned how his future would look at the Bernabeu. He would start by playing for Real’s Castilla team, which has been the stepping stone for many young players over the years.
Real’s academy has a rich history, producing stars like Emilio Butragueno, Raul, Iker Casillas, Juan Mata, Daniel Parejo, and Guti. Some current first-team players, like Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior, and Federico Valverde, also spent time in Castilla.
Castilla plays in Spain’s fourth division, where reserve teams compete in the senior football structure. Spanish Football Federation rules stop reserve teams from playing in the same division as their main team, so Castilla can never play higher than the second division unless Real’s first team is relegated—which would be a big problem for the club.
As noted, Chelsea’s nine-month ban on signing academy players means they can’t sign Gabriel until after December. This ban comes from violations during Roman Abramovich’s time as Chelsea’s owner.
Chelsea was fined £750,000 and banned for nine months from registering academy players for rules they broke between 2019 and 2022.
This punishment is separate from a July fine of £10 million and a two-transfer-window ban for breaking rules about payments to agents. That transfer ban is paused until June 30, 2027.
