Today’s race with Max Verstappen competing against 100 opponents will show a whole new side of the F1 star, all because of a special rule.
Max Verstappen is set to make history this Wednesday evening with an incredible challenge that’s never been done before by a Formula 1 driver.
The Red Bull Racing star will take part in the special “Max vs. 100” event, where he’ll try to overtake 100 drivers in just 30 laps around the famous Silverstone track.
Verstappen, a four-time world champion, has been racing karts since he was just four years old. Now, he’ll go back to his roots with a fun go-kart race against athletes, social media stars, and TV personalities.
“Max vs. 100” is a race organized by Red Bull where Verstappen starts at the very back and must pass all 100 drivers ahead of him within 30 laps. Each time he passes someone, that driver is out of the race, so it’s possible he could finish the challenge early.
To give the amateur drivers a fighting chance, each one can use a “fast lap” — a shortcut they can take once during the first 15 laps to catch up to Max. He also gets one “fast lap,” but only in the last 15 laps, to keep things fair.
Fans will get a peek at Verstappen’s racing style since he can talk to the other drivers during the race. There will also be a qualifying lap beforehand to set the starting order, with everyone getting one try to post their best time.
All karts are the same, weighing 85kg with driver and gear included. If a kart is lighter, ballast is added to even things out.
While Verstappen’s talent will help him move fast, the biggest hurdle might be handling the crowded track. He’ll need smart moves to find safe passes and avoid traffic.
Although most racers are amateurs, a few karting influencers will be racing too, eager to challenge a Formula 1 champion.
The event takes place at Silverstone on Wednesday, September 16, starting at 6pm BST, with live coverage beginning at 5pm BST. Fans in the UK can watch on ESPN through Disney+, included with their Disney+ subscription.
