Manchester United lose a historic record after Carabao Cup exit, and fans point to one player as the reason.
Manchester United have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup, and with it, they’ve lost one of their most famous records.
For the second year running, they got eliminated in their first match, losing 3-2 to Brighton at Old Trafford. This ended a historic run that started back in 2013, right after the legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson left.
Manchester United started strong, with young player Shea Lacey scoring in the 8th minute. Just two minutes later, Mason Mount made it 2-0, making it look like a comfortable win for the home team. But just before halftime, Brighton’s young forward Charalampos Kostoulas scored, and in the second half, stars Pascal Gross and Maxime De Cuyper helped Brighton take the lead.
This loss means United have lost their long-standing record of never losing a match at Old Trafford after being two goals ahead. The last time that happened was over 50 years ago, back in 1976 against Spurs. Since 2013, when Ferguson retired, United had played 145 games with a two-goal lead, winning 143 and drawing 2 — an incredible run that has now ended.
Adding to the pressure, United also recently lost to their rivals Manchester City in a heated match at home.
Fans weren’t shy about sharing their thoughts on social media, especially about one player. One wrote, “Supported United 50 years and never seen a worse full back than Mazraoui.” Another said, “What is Mazraoui even doing on the pitch? He looks weak and tired.” And another added, “Heaven and Mazraoui might be the worst combo this club has ever had.”
Next up, United will travel to Craven Cottage to play Fulham in the Premier League, their last game before the international break.
