Roy Keane has shared his honest thoughts about JJ Gabriel wanting to leave Manchester United, with some big European clubs interested in him.
Gabriel – whose full name is Joseph Junior Andreou Gabriel – told United earlier this week that he wants to cancel his registration with the club. The young player, often called ‘Kid Messi,’ made his first senior appearance in a pre-season game against Atlético Madrid. Now, he has officially told United he wants to leave and become a free agent. Big clubs like Real Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain are all keen on him.
However, United can challenge this request because Premier League rules say a player’s registration can only be canceled if the club, player, and their parent or carer all agree. If they don’t agree, anyone involved can ask the Premier League to make a final decision.
Gabriel has been with United since he was 11 and is seen as a huge talent. He won the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award for 2025/26 after scoring over 20 goals last season. BBC Sport reports that Gabriel’s people feel let down by the club, thinking they haven’t kept their promises about giving him a clear path to the first team, even though he was part of Michael Carrick’s pre-season squad.
Right now, Gabriel isn’t training with the first team, but United still hope he might stay.
The news about Gabriel’s possible exit came up on the latest episode of The Overlap, where Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville, Jill Scott, Ian Wright, and Keane all shared their opinions. Neville said Gabriel’s representatives have let him down, while Carragher warned that bad press like this could harm Gabriel’s future, pointing to other young players who didn’t reach their potential because of it.
Neville explained, “I don’t see why the reps of a 15-year-old would want to put him in the spotlight like this.” He added that it’s better to keep things calm and controlled, like how Arsenal protected young Max Dowman by limiting media attention.
Keane jumped in, saying he thinks Gabriel should be more patient and wait for his chance to play regularly for the first team. The former midfield star said, “Does he really need to rush? If you’re 15 and hoping to play for Man United’s first team, just wait a little longer. If United goes far in the cup, why not wait six more weeks? Carrick is under pressure and the team needs to win now. They can’t afford to risk games by playing a lot of young players who aren’t ready yet.”
After United’s 3-2 loss to Brighton in the Carabao Cup, Carrick addressed the situation, saying he is involved in conversations to try and keep Gabriel at the club. He said, “We need to be very careful here. He’s just 15, and from the club’s point of view, we have to look after our young players’ well-being. It’s important to be mindful of how much exposure he gets. We want to protect him as a young person.”
Carrick added, “It’s about caring for JJ as a child. He’s a young man, but we need to handle this situation carefully.”
United will play again at Fulham on Sunday, September 20.
