Michael Jordan’s “Last Dance” jersey is expected to sell for a huge $100 million at auction, says its current owner—though it’s more likely to go for quite a bit less.
Jordan wore this white Chicago Bulls jersey during Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz in June 1998. It’s the only known white jersey he wore in that series, which makes it really special.
The jersey was put up for auction on Tuesday through the online platform JOOPITER, with the sale set to last two weeks.
Rob Gough, who owns the jersey, believes it could go for an amazing amount. When he first decided to chase after the shirt, he didn’t know where it was or who had it. After buying it, the jersey actually arrived in an armored truck!
“It wasn’t easy to find,” Gough told The Sporting News in August. “Once someone holds items like this, they rarely let them go. I had to really hunt it down. It was a long process, like a treasure hunt. I never met the real owner—just one person, then another, until a broker finally found it for me. I didn’t even get to speak with the seller or know the price.”
Gough hasn’t worn the jersey himself and hasn’t talked to Jordan about it yet.
Now, the jersey is up for auction on JOOPITER with an estimated price between $10 million and $15 million. The auction started with a $10 million bid, which met the reserve price, and closes on September 30 at 1:02 am UK time.
“If someone pays even close to that estimate, they’re making an amazing investment,” Gough said. “This jersey could easily go for much more.”
So why is this jersey expected to be worth so much? First, it’s the only known white Jordan jersey from the 1998 Finals, his final season with the Bulls before he first retired. In Game 3, the Bulls beat the Jazz 96-54, with Jordan scoring 24 points. That win put the Bulls up 2-1 in the series, which they eventually won 4-2.
The Bulls then won their sixth NBA Championship in eight years during a thrilling Game 6, beating the Jazz 87-86. This game became the most-watched NBA game ever, with nearly 36 million viewers on June 14, 1998.
