Spanish media gave Anthony Gordon a tough review after his seven games with Barcelona.
The Spanish media have already formed their opinions about Anthony Gordon after his seventh game with the Catalan club.
Gordon joined Barca on a five-year contract following a £69.3 million move from Newcastle United just before the World Cup. He made an immediate impact by setting up four assists in his first four games.
However, in the last three La Liga matches, Gordon hasn’t been involved in any goals, even though his teammates have been making things tough for opposing defenses.
He started in Barca’s 4-2 win over Levante on September 13, with Lamine Yamal scoring twice to keep the team’s perfect start. Although Gordon was on the bench for the 7-2 win against Racing Santander, head coach Hansi Flick chose him to start against Sevilla on September 19, where Raphinha scored a hat-trick in a solid 3-1 win.
Yamal added two assists, but Gordon found it hard to make a strong impact, missing two clear chances to score his first goal for Barca.
His recent performances got a lot of attention from the Spanish press after the match.
Mundo Deportivo called his performance “incomplete,” saying, “He’s a tactical help, but as a striker, he’s missing the spark that turns a good player into a star. He ended up playing center forward and missed a chance he chased with more passion than skill.”
Barca Universal gave him a 6.5 rating, noting, “Gordon looked isolated on the wing and didn’t connect much with the busy play in the middle. He didn’t do many take-ons or create much danger with his crosses. His work rate was good, but his influence has dropped recently. He moved more towards the center later but didn’t get into any good scoring spots.”
Barca Blaugranes rated him 6/10, saying, “He’s starting to seem a bit one-sided now. He works hard but hasn’t produced much and missed several good chances to score.”
Sports Illustrated gave Gordon a slightly better score of 7.1, mentioning, “He had a few bright moments but seems too eager to score his first Barca goal. He missed an easy chance and was taken off soon after.”
AS shared, “He tried hard but didn’t make much happen. At least he never gives up and keeps going, but he’s been unlucky in front of goal. He had two great chances playing a false 9, assisted by Lamine and Adeyemi.”
SPORT rated him 6/10, saying, “He moved across the whole attack and ended up as a center-forward. He wasn’t sharp, missing two shots, and he needs to score to boost his confidence. Still, he kept the center-backs busy, handled pressure well, and showed the tactical discipline Flick wants. His style fits well with Adeyemi’s. Barcelona are unstoppable, scoring goals and showing resilience. They head into the international break unbeaten, with hopes this season will be very special.”
Barca will be back in action at home against Getafe after the international break.
