Liverpool is thinking about making a surprise move in January to bring back a player they sold only a year ago.
Liverpool is among several clubs interested in bringing midfielder Tyler Morton back, a year after the English player left Anfield.
Morton moved to French club Lyon for £15 million after spending 16 years at Liverpool. He came through their academy and made his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup match against Norwich City in September 2021.
The 23-year-old played 14 times for Liverpool and spent two seasons on loan in the Championship, with Blackburn Rovers in 2022/23 and then Hull City under Liam Rosenior in 2023/24.
Morton’s departure was decided by manager Arne Slot, who didn’t see him as a regular first-team player last season. Slot preferred players like Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, and Ryan Gravenberch in midfield.
In an interview with SPORTbible in October 2025, Morton said about Slot: “I think he thought I was a good player, but I don’t feel the trust was there as much. The limited chances seemed more about trust than ability. When I got to play in the cup, I felt I did well. I stayed focused through the season and also played in the under-21 Euros, which was amazing.”
Now, it looks like Liverpool might be wishing they kept him, as Morton has become one of the best midfielders in France. He’s played 53 games for Lyon and contributed six goals or assists. There’s even talk of him joining Thomas Tuchel’s England squad after becoming key to Paulo Fonseca’s plans at Lyon.
According to TEAMtalk, seven Premier League clubs are interested in Morton. Alongside Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Newcastle, Sunderland, and Everton want to sign him. Morton’s ability to play in central midfield and his growing experience at a high level have made him an exciting option for teams wanting a player who can make an instant difference.
Liverpool’s manager Andoni Iraola is said to be a fan of Morton, which could give Liverpool a chance to fix what some see as a mistake in selling him too soon.
As a lifelong Liverpool fan, leaving the club was emotional for Morton. In August 2025, he shared a heartfelt message to the fans:

Lots has changed in 17 years, but my love for Liverpool never will. I will always be a fan. You’ll never walk alone.”
After proving himself in one of Europe’s top leagues, Morton will likely be happy to come back to Anfield if the chance arises.
